Restoration started soon after, and it is expected that Viollet-le-Duc’s spire will be rebuilt by the end of 2023. On March 15, 2019, a catastrophic fire engulfed the Notre Dame Cathedral and destroyed the central spire, the centuries-old wooden roof and much of the interior. The cathedral was restored again between 19, this time the historic architecture was carefully preserved. Viollet-le-Duc made drastic, controversial modifications to the building and even added a spire. The twenty-year-long restoration was led by a local architect, Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc. An average downpour means nearly 7,000 gallons of water must be drained away. 'Notre Dame' is the way the French say 'Our Lady.' The building for this project began in 1163 during the reign of Louis VII. For a building the size of Notre-Dame, the problem of water removal is on an extreme scale. This cathedral is considered a Gothic perfection and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It's thought that these bells also survived, since the bell towers emerged from the blaze relatively unscathed, but their fate hasn't been officially announced yet.It wasn’t until the nineteenth century before the Cathedral was fully restored thanks in part to the writer Victor Hugo, who with his book ‘Notre-Dame de Paris’, made the Parisians realize the cathedral was worth restoring. Notre Dame is an old Catholic cathedral that stands on the Cite Island in the Seine River located in the center of Paris. ![]() The others are named Marie, Gabriel, Anne-Geneviève, Denis, Marcel, Etienne, Benoît-Joseph, Maurice, and Jean-Marie. The oldest bell, named Emmanuel, has been inside the cathedral since 1861, and has tolled for momentous historic occasions, such as the end of World War II. Some of the nine new bronze bells are displayed in Notre-Dame Cathedral during a ceremony of blessing in 2013. The iconic spire collapsed within an hour of the fire starting, and Paris deputy mayor, Emmanuel Gregoire, said the cathedral has suffered 'colossal damages,' according to CBS News.
